#549 That dirty word called Clone

So, I thought I would have my first post on this be something that I hold very dear to my heart, and that's my thoughts on players' use of the word "clone." A clone tends to be commonly referred to a game that effectively copies everything from another game.

You see this word thrown around a lot in the mobile and social networking games market. Due to the simplicity of most of games in those markets, it can be very hard to understand the difference between the games and in turn make it seem like they are a clone.

So here is my definition of a game clone: when a new game becomes almost indistinguishable to another game and adds no significant design/mechanic change compared to an already released game.

I believe it is important to understand the term I use here as "indistinguishable." Since games are more than just mechanics, they are a medium in which content like art and stories play a significant role in defining a game. So to fall into my "indistinguishable" category, the game's art must be very close to that of a previous game, play very similar to the other game, and have a very similar story.

A good example would be the FPS genre. Before time slow downs, terrain manipulation, as so on, it was what your gun selection was, a first person view, and killing things. Maybe even killing things with an objective. You would not call "Call of Duty" a clone of "Castle Wolfenstien" would you? Of course not—the graphics are so much better, the guns shoot so much harder, the bullet physics are more advanced, and the story is completely different. But if you boil it down, you're just a person with a gun shooting things. Just like "Castle Wolfenstein." It is important to note that games build on previous games and thus we are all building on the foundations laid out before us. Sometimes it's the subtle changes that can make a game feel completely different from another.

I feel strongly that this word, which among the industry, is a considerably offensive term to place on a game, that we, as the community, should be more careful how we use it. Does it happen? Sadly, yes. Does it happen as often as people rant about it? Not really. (excluding flash games/kongregate it is pretty common there)

As a gaming community, we should be mature enough to not wield such labels so lightly so when we use them they will have more impact. If a game really is a clone, it should receive the full negative impact of that word, but otherwise using the term to quickly could stunt the growth of a genre.

I challenge you: Next time you see a game you think is a clone, instead of looking for all the things it seems to copy from another game, look at all it does that is different.

Yet another installment of fun base making from the copious amount of extra materials in my pack. This time I used the "Biomass" I had in my inventory, which I refined to make "Bio-Fiber Infused Walls"... then it became the "BioSaurus Rex" ...the squishy yet fun Base... god I wish i could craft different colored balls to make it into a ball pit! (hint hint dev team) :P

#367 How to activate your "Signature"

Hello there everyone!

I was thinking, I had this problem with my account when I was trying to activate my signature, so I thought I might as well post this in here if anyone is interested or wants to know how to activate their "Signature".

Firstly you want to go over your name in the "Toolbar" in the top right, and click on "Preference".

Next, you should be on the "Preference" page, and make sure that the "Show people's signatures with their messages" is checked. Once that is done click "Save"

Once you have done that, now to Nathan in the "Toolbar" again but this time go to "Signature".

That should take you to the "Signature" page and in there you can add you signature.

Once you have added it and changed the settings you should be ready to view and show off your signature.

In all honesty you should have come to the realization this game was an unfinished product before you purchased it.
IMO I think of it as more of a privilege getting early access to game in its own right you don't have to wait until the game is actually released. I also find this is a great development model as the devs get huge amounts of feedback and some player ideas may even get implemented. I'm not even sure where you get off with your negativity it's sad really. Aside from the low forum activity its one of the best I've been part of I mean we get screen updates weekly so we can see the new ideas and features coming our way and weekly prize giveaways! On most forums thats unheard of especially for an indie studio

#7653 Summer Event Wrap-up

First, I want to thank everyone that got involved in the event! It was a blast, and we saw more participation than any event previous to this. We hope everyone had a great time! We're always looking for more feedback to keep making these events more fun and enjoyable to the community. Prizes have been sent for both weeks of giveaways, as well as the Scavenger hunt. The winners of the armor and pet design contests haven't been selected yet, but the dev team will be making their picks in the next day or so. Keep an eye out for that announement! If you guys have anything you want to share about the event and what you liked or disliked about it, please feel free to post here. #3094 Edge of Space: Homecoming - Chapter 3

Dangers and Discoveries



Mykhril Wildhide shivered in the frigid morning air as he began to struggle into his space suit. Outside the self-contained atmosphere of the colony, there was no breathable air. It was this dangerous dependency that his science team was meant to find an answer to on this expedition. To sustain the colony they needed air, and to have air they had to have renewable energy. He pondered the question as his colleagues made their preparations. The technologies ArkCo possessed were undoubtedly impressive, but he hoped they would be enough. For about the fifth time, he checked and double checked the equipment, especially the powerful mineral detectors they would rely on to find any substance that could be of use to them. He was nearly finished, when he looked up to see a familiar sight. His excitable co-worker, Professor Fylas, was waving his mineral detector around, seeming rather agitated.

“Wildhide, this thing doesn’t work! Just look at these readings! We haven’t even left yet!” he shouted angrily. Of all the times for things to start malfunctioning! The professor tossed the instrument aside in frustration.

Wildhide stooped down to pick it up, when his own device began emitting the same readouts. What in the name of ArkCo was going on here? “Now my detector is also acting up, something is wrong.” He noted, reading the data as it scrolled rapidly across the screen. “Or...is it? Professor...take a closer look!”

The realization struck both scientists at the same time. Even the soil was mineral rich! If they could learn to refine it to a useable state, even the dirt under their feet would be valuable for energy. What had seemed a barren wasteland when they arrived, suddenly appeared to be a world of opportunity. They could be on the brink of discovering minerals and ores previously unknown in their galaxy.

Fylas ran to pack his own equipment, there was no way he would miss a chance to be part of this. “I’m coming along!” He shouted back at Wildhide. “You’re not having all the fun!”

Whisper and Commander Wolf came out of the barracks dome to join Wildhide near the perimeter. Whisper looked at each of them in turn: Wolf, Wildhide, and Professor Fylas as he came back with his instruments. They had to realize the magnitude of what they had discovered.

“I want to know, right now, that I have your completely loyalty. What I am about to say does not go any further. Should I find that I have been betrayed, I will know the source, and I will deal with it without hesitation.” Her eyes were ice cold as she addressed them, she would take no chances with what they had found.

The three men exchanged glances of their own. They had never heard her speak like this. None of them hesitated to swear loyalty to Whisper. If there was one thing they could count on, it was that she would never ask anything of them that would bring them harm. They each knew how much they meant to her.

Commander Wolf met her gaze, whatever she had to say, it was serious. “You can count on us, Whisper. What you say will not leave this conversation.” He told her, resting a hand on her shoulder. “What is it you need from us?”

“We must not report this to ArkCo. Should they, or anyone else realize the resources that are available here, we will never be rid of the fortune hunters. We would be ordered to return, and the legacy of these colonists, their birthright, would never be restored. What is here, is for them, not for the gain of others. They are here, facing deadly danger, so that they can be home once again. I will not allow anyone, including my superiors, to take that from them.” Her voice left no room for argument.

Ion stood by her side, watching the others. She was asking them to disobey orders, and to withhold information from people who could be deadly when crossed. If they chose to remain loyal to ArkCo, he was fully prepared to protect Whisper, by whatever means necessary.

“We are with you, Whisper.” Wildhide answered. “It will not be easy, but if we do not tell the colonists, we can keep this hidden. We can teach them to refine, to make use of what is in plain sight. But if we find more precious materials, we will have to safeguard all of it, even from them.”

“Agreed, Mykhril. I don’t want them to be implicated should we be discovered. Plausible deniability. Let us pray it doesn’t come to that.” she answered. “Professor Fylas, we are going to be needing your help most of all. You’re going to have to help us send back reports that show enough promise to keep ArkCo from looking too closely into Alpha Colony. Can you do it?”

“Can I do it?” Fylas laughed. “Could Einstein solve an equation? Of course I can do it! Don’t you worry, they will never suspect anything. I’ll just mention the infestation of our blue floating friends, and dropping by for a visit won’t seem very appealing.” He grinned widely. The Professor understood perfectly well what they were doing, but even in dangerous times he couldn’t keep his sense of humor from surfacing.

“Very well, then we’d better get started. Let’s see what really IS here.” Whisper nodded as she spoke, signalling the Commander to bring his squad forward. Whatever was waiting out there for them, it was time they got a better look at their new home.

Commander Wolf and Ion led the group, watching the land in front of them carefully as the team moved forward. Ion scanned ahead with his eyes, which saw things that humans could not. He could make out the thermal outlines of several more of the jelly creatures they had encountered earlier. He motioned to the commander and the group to change direction slightly to avoid agitating them. The equipment they had brought was too important to risk having it ruined. Just ahead of Ion, Commander Wolf held up his arm, motioning for the group to stop. He stood at the mouth of a massive hole, staring into the darkness below. Professor Fylas nearly fell into the opening as the ground suddenly shook beneath their feet.

“What in the name of the rings of Saturn was that?!” the startled scientist exclaimed, grabbing Ion’s arm to steady himself. “First energy stealing jellyfish, and now earthquakes? I really need to think more carefully before taking an assignment!”

He barely got the words out before the ground shook again, this time harder, and seemingly closer to where the group stood. Seconds passed, and a third tremor rocked the ground.

“That’s no earthquake! Look!” Wildhide shouted over the noise. He aimed his gun now at something approaching in the distance. It was not large, but each time it jumped and struck the earth again, the ground shuddered beneath it. “Quickly! Get back from that hole! I have a clear shot!”

The others needed no second warning, they backed away from the opening and took aim with their weapons as well. The first of the leapers to come into view was getting closer now, jumping once again and throwing it’s slug-like body back to earth with explosive force. It was not alone. Wildhide fired at one of the creatures, but it took several shots before it was subdued, laying still on the ground. Like a monstrous heartbeat, the concussive blasts came one after another. BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Ion caught Whisper around the waist just as she was about to fall. Commander Wolf took down another of the leapers with a precision headshot. A third fell to a bolt of blue-white energy as Ion wielded his other-worldly power.

“We have to go back!” Whisper shouted to the team over the mayhem. “They just keep coming!” As if on cue, the earth shook again as several more of the creatures came into view. “Ion and I can hold them, now run!!”

The professor, Commander Wolf, and the ArkCo squad didn’t hesitate to follow her order. Whisper and Ion once again called forth their power. Had the team not been fleeing, they would have seen another spectacle of the alien beings’ true ability. Whisper summoned the energy into beams, weaving them between the explorers and the leapers. Ion matched her actions, the two of them once again communicating by a power other than words. The barrier they formed was impenetrable. The first of the leapers to strike it let out a shriek as it fell to the ground, stunned, but unharmed. Once they were certain the creatures could not intercept them, Whisper and Ion turned and ran to catch up with their companions. They had to put as much distance as they could between themselves and the creatures before letting go of the energy barrier. Once the impacts were less intense, they let go, eager to be away from the area. Whisper could feel the presence of the others not far ahead. They had taken shelter inside a shallow cave, allowing the two to rejoin them. The rest of the team had not noticed in their flight from the danger behind them, but the professor was the first to point out the circumstances.

“It’s already nearly dark, the second sun will be down soon. Heaven knows what comes out here after dark, but I don’t want to find out.” He told them, more than a little agitation in his voice.

“He’s right.” Commander Wolf spoke up. “At least here we have partial shelter. I say we make camp here tonight and make our way back to the colony tomorrow.”

“Agreed.” Whisper answered. “I don’t think any of us is up for more visitors tonight. Ion, keep close watch tonight. We cannot afford to let our guard down. We are not alone.”

“I feel them too.” He answered his friend and creator. “You are right, they are not far. Whatever they may be. We should be safe enough here, I would think.”

The team dropped their packs and started to make camp, setting up a fire as the cold night air began to seep in. Surrounded by the darkness of space, they could not help but be keenly aware of how alone they were, and how far from help. Whisper was worried, concerned for every life she was responsible for. They had barely seen anything yet of this alien place, but already the dangers were making themselves apparent. She was lost deep in thought when she noticed that the firelight was reflecting off part of the back wall. Getting to her feet, she moved around the fire to investigate. The others noted her sudden attention to their surroundings.

“What is it, Whisper?” Mykhril asked her, moving to stand next to her. “Are you alright?” He followed her gaze, and his eyes went wide. He dug into his pack for his instruments and scanned the substance. “Oh...my...Whisper, that is solid Titanium!! Do you have any idea how much this deposit would be worth?!”

Whisper didn’t need to hear more. It was both what she had hoped, and what she had feared. This broken world was not the desolate wasteland it had been assumed to be. How could she begin to protect this place? These people? She had Ion, and the CORE. She had a single squad of ArkCo’s elite military. What would these be against the forces that would descend on this place if they knew its worth? Her thoughts turned then to one that she always thought about. She thought of home, and of someone that she missed. Someone that she was beginning to feel that she needed by her side. Whisper wanted him there, along with Ion. The two beings in the universe that made her feel completely safe. She did not know where he was, or what he was doing, but she knew one thing for certain. He would be there for her. Shaking herself out of her thoughts, she turned her attention back to the titanium deposit.


“We need to bring some of this back. If we can refine it, it could be useful to us in so many ways. This colony can become self-sustaining.” She told the others, kneeling down to unpack an ArkCo laser mining pick.

The long hours of night rolled by, but the team didn’t seem to notice. The firelight danced off an ever growing mountain of precious resources. The commander and the professor were packing it into the bags, as much as they could carry back. The suns were already rising when they had taken as much ore as they could. The rest would have to remain until it could be collected. They carefully noted the location of the cave, having mapped as much area as they could see on their outward journey. All of them realized the precarious position the colony was in. It had just become a race against time. Their lack of rest didn’t slow them as they set out to return to the colony, nor did the load they now carried. They would have to lay out their course of action as soon as possible.

#3064 ArkCo News Special Update!

To say that March is going to be crazy for us here at ArkCo is an understatement! We are gearing up for our appearance at PAX, as well as ramping up development on Edge of Space. At our livestream with Destructoid last week, we had a big announcement in the form of a challenge to the community: If Edge of Space can get through the next pull for Greenlight, lead developer Jacob Crane will shave his hair, and his beard! No more shaggy for "Lord Shaggy!" King Foom immediately jumped at the opportunity, and snatched up the right to livestream the shaving, should the goal be met! We need everyone out spreading the word, to get the challenge out there and help us finally push over the top and get on Steam!

We are also very happy to announce our first Test Key Weekend next weekend! This is a Test of the New system and there will a LIMITED amount of keys distributed. We are going to invite anyone that wants to test the game for a weekend to come and join us March 8th-10th to experience the game for the weekend, FREE! While the game doesn't lend itself to making a demo, because of the very rapid development, we felt this was a great solution, and will allow people to see how the game plays for them! More details about how to receive your keys coming soon!

The madness doesn't even stop there, far from it! We have also just announced our first ArkCoNaut of the Month, thanking a special fan each month for their contributions to our community. Winners will be granted a special forum tag, as well as a collectors' Edition copy of
Edge of Space. We want to recognize our amazing fans, out there every day helping make the community the wonderful experience it is. It was not easy to pick one from so many, and we feel truly blessed to have such great people around us.

There is so much coming up that we can't even share yet, but suffice it to say that it's going to be VERY exciting! This is a very good time for everyone to get in and sign up for our forums, to be the first to hear everything that's coming.

With everything getting so very busy, Jake wanted to take the time to share the following with the community:

Hey everyone! It has been a crazy couple of weeks and things have been progressing well. We are now getting our heads down into the nitty gritty for PAX. For those of you who do not know, it's a big deal and we will be there with our own shiny booth showing off EoS!

So we have announced that we are going to not do the stream this week. This is because of all the preparations for a really hard push for PAX are being made. March is going to be a really focused time and that means you might see less of the crew around as we are tucking in to really push forward.

As it stands we might still stream next Saturday, but patches and patch schedules are going to be as soon as we feel it's ready. Keep your eyes out as various patches will be coming through.

We are going to be putting in all of our might to make all ArkCo recruits proud during PAX showing. During this time we are going to need YOUR help. Since we can not get out as much, we need you making videos, getting active, and getting others active. It's going to be a tough few weeks for us and we ask you to bear with us as we work our brains dead!

ATMOSPHERE DOES NOT MAKE ITSELF!!!

This is the Official Edge of Space FAQ. Here you will find the answers to the most common questions we receive. If you have a question that is not answered here, by all means feel free to post it here. I will frequently update this thread with current information, and add the more common questions posted.

The Edge of Space FAQ

Q: Let's start with an easy one. Who are you?

A: We are HandyMan Studios, and we are making this game from the ground up, for you. HandyMan is a two-man team, Jake Crane, and Paul Ash, based in North Carolina.

Jacob "Lord Shaggy" Crane

Lead game designer and CEO of Handyman. As dedicated designer Jacob serves as the major creative force, keeping everyone on track, keeping everyone laughing, and a general goodie-two shoes with a few hidden talents. He's worked on one of the oldest and still competing MMOs out there and has been in the industry for almost 7 years.

Paul "SteamPunkProgrammer" Ash

Co-founder and CTO of company Handyman Studios. Paul has worked in the game industry for close to 8 years. He's worked on everything from massive AAA MMOs to facebook games. Kind of the mad scientest of the crew. If you think it's not possible, he can probably change your mind.


Q: 'So, what is the game about?'

A: Edge Of Space is a dynamic, open world, survival, exploration, sandbox adventure game; where you build, create, mold, and work to survive and change the area around you. Your task? Terraform an entire world back to life!


Q: 'Okay then, what do I actually do?'

A: Edge of Space is about the journey of surviving in the deepest, darkest, weirdest, and possibly most interesting part of the known universe. How long have you been in cryo-sleep? No one really knows, and we doubt you will be thinking about that as you try to explore, scavenge, build, survive, and fight rocket-powered, cybernetically-enhanced laser sharks wanting to feed on you. If there is one thing you will NOT do in Edge of Space, it's get bored!


Q: 'What platforms will the game be released on?'

A: Edge of Space will launch supporting Windows and Mac. Linux will be looked into later, post launch. Time and manpower allowing, it's something we want to do, but will have to look at it down the road.


Q: 'What engine are you using to make the game?'

A: The game is programmed in C#, using a HEAVILY modified unity engine. Our core engineer stripped unity down to its barest elements and REBUILT it to his own specifications.

Q: 'Will the game have multiplayer?'

A: Absolutely! The game is being built from the core with multiplayer experience in mind. We want to make playing with your friends as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Q: 'Do you have a beta, and will there be pre-orders?'

A: One of the rewards from our Kickstarter was access to the beta of the game, which is currently in progress. Pre-order sales are available on Steam Early Access. This grants immediate access to the beta as well as all of the upcoming content for the game:

Q: 'Will there be mod tools?'

A: Yes! We come from a history of being modders ourselves and understand the needs of having tools to help you craft an experience for yourself, friends, or just making something fun and new. If we didn't put it in game, YOU CAN!

Q: 'When are you releasing the game?'

A: The game has been launched on Steam Early Access with pre-order sales which include beta access plus all upcoming content/patches. The game will be frequently updated long after release as long as sales remain strong for it. We are committed to making those updates FREE! Q: 'Great! How much will it cost?'

A: Pre-order cost is $12, or $25 for the premium edition which includes the soundtrack and art book, as well as a sugar glider pet. Both tiers include beta access to the game, as well as the first response armor. The final retail cost will be $15.

Q: 'I have pre-ordered the Standard or Special Edition of the game and can not find my bonus items'

A: These incentives will be provided upon the full launch of the game, not during Early Access. Once the game launches these in game items will be available to your character from the very start of the game.

Q: 'I love social media! Do you have anything I can join to help promote the game?'

A: We certainly do! We have a Google Group, a Facebook page, a Twitter feed and a Steam group. We are also on IndieDB and Desura and have a livechat on IRC 24/7 at irc.icedawn.net #edgeofspace. There are plenty of great ways to connect with our community!

Q: 'I want to see X, Y, or Z in Edge of Space. Can I make game suggestions?'

A: Please do! The team FREQUENTLY reads the forums, and welcome the community's ideas and suggestions. If you have something you think would be a great addition to the game, please post it in our "ArkCo Lab" forum and we will happily give it a read.

Q: Can I make Youtube videos, or stream the game on Twitch?

A: Absolutely!! We welcome and encourage players to make videos and streams of Edge of Space! There is no NDA for the game, and you absolutely have our permission!


Q: 'How can I learn more about the game? I still have questions!'

A: We have weekly livestreams which we open up to questions and feedback from the community. Additionally, Jake, Paul, and the Edge of Space community team are always on hand in the IRC to take questions and commments.

Q: If I pre-order the game, will I get a Steam key now that you Greenlit?

A: Definitely! Our pre-order customers and Kickstarter customers will be given Steam keys when we launch on Steam. We will be announcing the details of that when keys become available!

#10350 Heya im New and id like to know if i could setup my own server for this game?

Hello there and welcome to the forums. Servers are hosted by the users so you can quickly and easily host it yourself from your machine if you have port 1337 opened on your router and know your Internal and external IPs as needed for local or net play. As for running it dedicated the developers have stated that the ability to do so is there though they will be putting up a guide on how to do so soon. It is difficult to say exactly how many players you can handle at that speed, though the closer they are to your location the better it should run. The optimization goal is 7-10 players though the hardcap will allow for 255 if you were capable of handling it. I've not looked into the dedicated side of the servers myself though I will see about getting that information for you.
